Supply chains under pressure: Why local sourcing is gaining ground in the decorative coatings market

Global uncertainties are forcing the paint and coatings industry to rethink its sourcing strategies. In the decorative segment, more and more manufacturers are turning to local supply chains — for both strategic and sustainability reasons. 

 Geopolitical tensions, rising energy costs, and fragile transport routes are putting global supply networks under strain. The market for decorative coatings — with an estimated global volume of 27.7 billion litres — is particularly affected. 

 Manufacturers such as BASF and DAW SE are responding with new strategies: local sourcing, reduced dependence on individual suppliers, and optimized warehousing are intended to mitigate future disruptions. These developments often go hand in hand with a stronger focus on sustainability, for example through the use of regionally available, bio-based raw materials.

Local supply chains offer more than just ecological advantages. Economically, companies hope to benefit from more stable prices, shorter lead times, and improved planning reliability for construction projects.
