Corrosion remains a major challenge for metal infrastructures. A recent review highlights the effectiveness of epoxy resin (ER) and epoxy phenolic resin (EPR)-based coatings in protecting steel and aluminum surfaces.
Incorporating compounds like zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, silicon dioxide, carbon nanotubes, and graphene oxide further enhances the coatings’ performance. However, coating failures due to surface pores allow corrosive species to compromise the structure.
Despite over a century of research, the mechanisms behind coating degradation continue to be studied. This article consolidates advancements, explores failure mechanisms, and provides insights into future predictive formulation strategies for corrosion protection.
