Eco-friendly and facile method to prepare waterborne polyurethane based fire-resistant & waterproof coatings for wood protection

2024-07-09 11:09

Researchers found that an ecological and simple method for producing water-based, fire-resistant and waterproof coatings for wood protection can be developed by mixing water-based polyurethane with commercially available flame retardants.

The research proves that a coating of about 250 μm can create a carbon layer of about 10 mm, allowing the painted plywood to withstand firing for about 20 minutes.  Source: Adobe Firefly - adobe.stock.com

The fire-resistant & waterproof coatings for wood protection are highly demanded to reduce fire risk and save lives because wooden furniture and in-house decorations are widely used in our daily life. For the research, an eco-friendly and facile method was proposed to prepare such coatings, where a waterborne polyurethane (WPU) with non-volatility was blended with commercial flame retardants.
