The American Coatings Association (ACA) announced the appointment of Mike Johnson as president and CEO, effective Nov. 1, 2024. Johnson, president and CEO of the National Stone, Sand, & Gravel Association (NSSGA), will succeed Andy Doyle, who was first appointed as the association’s CEO in March 1988 and whose ACA career spans 45 years.

Johnson has led NSSGA since 2013 and will remain in his role through Oct. 11, 2024. During his 11-year tenure, the association reached numerous milestones, including implementation of four successful Rocks Build America strategic plans; growth of its membership to more than 500 companies within the aggregates and industrial sand industry; and setting new records for participation and exhibit sales of its hallmark AGG1 trade show.

Johnson has deep roots in the association and advocacy world. Prior to joining NSSGA, he served as executive vice president and chief advocacy officer at the National Beer Wholesalers Association, and before that, as vice president of government relations at the Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America. His association experience began at the National Association of Home Builders, where he served as congressional affairs and grassroots director.

“We look forward to Mike’s leadership at ACA and are confident his knowledge and experience will propel the paint and coatings industry and the association forward over the next several years,” said Jeff Powell, ACA chairman and president and CEO of Diamond Vogel, Inc.

ACA announced Doyle’s impending retirement in March of this year.

“It has been a distinct honor and privilege to work for the coatings industry and to be given the chance to lead this wonderful organization,” said Doyle. “I am especially grateful for the support of our current and past elected leaders, our chairmen and vice chairmen, and the members of our Board and Executive Committee. I consider myself blessed to have worked with a tremendously talented staff team. They are a smart, dedicated, and caring group of people who work hard every day to advance our industry. I cannot thank them enough for their friendship and support.”

“Andy’s stewardship of the association over the past four decades is nothing short of extraordinary,” said Powell. “He has been a consistent champion for our industry and interests. During his tenure, ACA created the landmark paint stewardship program PaintCare, which has cemented the industry’s recognition as a leader in the environmental and sustainability space, as well as the industry’s premier scientific and technological forum — the American Coatings Show & Conference — a pivotal platform and showcase for our industry’s innovative products and technologies. We are beyond grateful to Andy for his steady leadership and unwavering commitment to the industry and the ACA membership for so many years and wish him all the best in his retirement.”
