A new class of UV-curable coatings has been introduced, leveraging thiol-click chemistry and an interpenetrating network (IPN) structure. This innovative waterborne poly(thiourethane-urethane) acrylate (WPTUA) coating combines superior hardness, toughness, and water resistance.

The synthesis involved isophorone diisocyanate, polycarbonate diol, 2-dimethylol propionic acid, trimethylolpropane tris(3-mercaptopropionate) (TMPMP), and pentaerythritol tetraacrylate (PETTA). Coatings with 16 wt% TMPMP and 28 wt% PETTA exhibited excellent stability, thermal properties, and protective performance.

With rapid curing and versatility, WPTUA coatings are ideal for protecting delicate substrates like paper, plastic, and wood, offering groundbreaking advancements in functional coatings.
