Hz info:Tianjin Dowill Paint Technology Co., Ltd. recently announced an investment of RMB 10 million to establish a "High-Performance Coatings R&D Center Project," with construction planned to commence in July 2025. This initiative aims to meet growing global demand in the shipbuilding and offshore industries while aligning with China’s "dual-carbon" strategic goals, driving the coatings industry toward low-VOC, high-safety, and multifunctional upgrades.

The project is located in the Bio-Manufacturing Industrial Park of Tianjin Airport Economic Area, leasing 2,619 square meters of space. Construction is scheduled for completion by December this year. With a total investment of RMB 10 million—including RMB 510,000 (5.1%) dedicated to environmental protection—the center will be equipped with specialized devices such as multifunctional high-speed dispersers, drying ovens, and pneumatic reciprocating machines. It will establish a comprehensive R&D system covering eco-friendly industrial coatings, offshore coatings, and marine coatings.

Upon completion, the center’s annual R&D capacity will include:

  • Eco-friendly industrial coatings (water-based): 180 batches/year (4kg per batch)

  • Eco-friendly industrial coatings (solvent-based): 290 batches/year (2–4kg per batch)

  • Matching thinners: 50 batches/year (4kg per batch)

  • Curing agents: 30 batches/year (4kg per batch)

  • Four-layer offshore coatings (solvent-based): 378 batches/year (1kg per batch)

  • Marine coatings (solvent-based): 500 batches/year (1kg per batch)

  • Matching thinners: 204 batches/year (1kg per batch)

  • Curing agents: 102 batches/year (1kg per batch)

The R&D team will optimize formulations based on client needs, refine solutions through performance testing, and ultimately deliver high-performance coatings.

Established on November 15, 2021, Tianjin Dowill Paint Technology Co., Ltd. is jointly held by Tianjin Dowill Paint Chemical Co., Ltd. and several individual shareholders. Its core business focuses on R&D for marine, offshore, and eco-friendly industrial coatings. The new R&D center will further enhance the company’s technological innovation capabilities, supporting industry transformation.

Key Advances in Marine Coatings: Certifications and Market Expansion

Sustained investment in innovation has driven breakthrough progress for Dowill Paints in marine coatings. In July 2025, Vice President Li Jihua shared the newly developed "amphiphilic" structural resin technology at the China International Ship Technology & Safety Forum. By incorporating hydrophilic groups into the resin backbone, this technology resolves challenges such as difficult polishing control and short protection cycles in traditional antifouling paints. Combined with fine-particle antifoulant processes, it reduces ship fuel consumption by 10.5%. The company’s self-polishing antifouling paint 9000S, leveraging next-gen methacrylic silane technology with low friction and self-smoothing properties, has been applied to Five-Star Red Flag ocean-going vessels, marking Dowill’s official entry into the ocean-going marine coatings market.

In certification, Dowill’s full range of marine coatings passed classification society approvals in a single attempt, with a 100% pass rate for PSPC series products. BV (Bureau Veritas) certification has completed all tests and is pending final approval, expected soon.

Founded in 2024, Dowill Paints specializes in technological innovation and promotion of high-performance green anticorrosive industrial coatings, serving marine, offshore, and new energy sectors. With five production bases in Tianjin Airport Area, Shandong Linyi, and others—supported by six IATF 16949-compliant R&D labs—its Qidong and Shanghai facilities feature 3D robotic spraying systems that simulate national climate conditions for process validation in automotive, marine, and wind power applications. Dowill’s container coatings are specified by the world’s top 6 shipping companies and top 5 leasing firms, capturing 40% market share. The Tianjin R&D center will further strengthen its marine coatings technology, delivering eco-efficient solutions globally.

Cross-Domain Synergy in Green Tech: Building Diversified Growth Engines

While solidifying its core strengths in marine coatings, Dowill Paints is accelerating the deployment of its "green coating" solutions across multiple sectors through strategic capacity expansion and cutting-edge technology upgrades.

In the new energy wind power sector, subsidiary Shanghai Qingqing Environmental Technology Co., Ltd. won a bid in mid-2024 for the "Wind Turbine Blade Post-Processing Project" at Zhuzhou Times New Material’s Hami base, marking Dowill’s expansion into a new segment and advancing integrated coating solutions. Earlier, Shanghai Dowill Paints acquired Carbon Valley Green Bay enterprise Zhongrui Company and invested RMB 358.3 million to build projects including annual capacities of 50,000 tons of wind turbine blade resin, 10,000 tons of industrial adhesives for new energy, 15,000 tons of high-performance powder coatings, and 2,500 tons of water-based automotive coatings—achieving full industrial chain coverage from resin to coating.

In automotive coatings, Dowill has also taken strategic steps toward green coating leadership. Its 3C1B high-solid car body coating achieved successful trial spraying on Geely Ruilan’s first model at the Chongqing base in 2023. This product excels in appearance, scratch-free application, and recoating adhesion while enabling "mixed-line production" with existing processes, reducing costs for brands and setting new green coating trends.

In its traditional stronghold of container coatings, Dowill’s green innovations stand out. At the 2024 Intermodal Asia Exhibition, Executive Deputy General Manager Shi Feng showcased three core green coating systems—water-based coatings, high-solid adhesion primers, and powder coatings—demonstrating integrated green solutions for containers. Its "Standard Marine Container Powder Coating Application" won the "Green Technology Excellence Award" from the China Container Industry Association. Dowill also co-drafted the group standard *T/CCIASD 10012-2024 Water-based Coatings for ISO Standard Containers* (implemented August 2024), leading industry standardization.

Dowill continues to drive technological upgrades. Jiangsu Dowill Paints successfully patented a "Long-Lasting Water-Based Epoxy Zinc-Rich Primer and Preparation Method" (Publication No. CN 119144210 A). By combining zinc powder with surface-grafted polymer chains and carboxyl-functionalized graphene oxide, it optimizes conductive networks and dispersion, significantly enhancing corrosion resistance, flexibility, and impact strength—providing robust technical support for green anticorrosion needs across industries.
