As demand for high-purity battery metals like lithium, nickel, cobalt, and copper surges due to the rapid growth of electric vehicles, consumer electronics, and low-carbon initiatives, battery manufacturers require efficient purification processes to meet stringent purity standards. LANXESS’ Lewatit® ion exchange resins address these critical needs with a comprehensive product line designed for recovery, refining, and recycling, delivering high-purity products while reducing operational costs and carbon footprints.

“At this pivotal moment in the global energy transition, we at LANXESS are proud to energize the battery world with cutting-edge chemical solutions that drive sustainability. With our first appearance at WBE, we’re not only showcasing the power of our Lewatit® ion exchange resins—but also reaffirming our commitment to China as a key growth market and innovation hub. This is another important milestone in advancing our localization strategy and supporting the circular economy through energizing chemistry,” said Michael Rockel, CEO of LANXESS Greater China and global head of the Liquid Purification Technologies (LPT) business unit.

At this WBE exhibition, LANXESS is showcasing Lewatit® ion exchange resins, including Lewatit® MonoPlus TP 207, Lewatit® MonoPlus TP 209 XL, Lewatit MonoPlus TP 214, and Lewatit MDS TP 220, Lewatit MDS TP 260, Lewatit TP 272, and Lewatit VPOC 1026. These products are widely used in key processes such as refining and recycling within the battery material production chain.

High Yield and Purity in Battery Metal Concentrate Purification for Refining & Recycling

Battery metal concentrates, obtained via recycling cathode materials from lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) or through hydrometallurgical mining operations, typically contain impurities such as calcium, magnesium, aluminum, zinc, iron, and copper. Lewatit® selective chelating resins, specifically Lewatit® MDS TP 208, Lewatit® MDS TP 260, Lewatit® TP 272, and Lewatit® VPOC 1026, demonstrate exceptional selectivity and loading capacities for impurity removal. These resins achieve impurity removal below specification limits while preserving valuable battery metals, resulting in higher yields and recoveries.

Based on the company’s unique jetting technology for the production of truly monodisperse beads our resins substantially reduce the need for regeneration through much longer cycle times. For customers this means getting high purity at lower operational costs.

Cost Efficiency and Simplified Battery Metal Recovery with Resin-in-Pulp

Lewatit® MonoPlus TP 209 XL resin supports resin-in-pulp (RIP) technology, enabling battery metals extraction directly from ore pulp post-leaching without capital-intensive countercurrent decantation. Its larger bead size (up to 0.9 mm) facilitates efficient resin-feed separation, high mechanical stability, and low attrition rates, reducing resin replacement costs.

Additionally, Lewatit® MDS TP 220 resin is optimized for nickel recovery in streams with high ferric and cobalt concentrations, offering faster kinetics due to smaller bead sizes and shorter diffusion paths. This provides higher resin capacity, extended service life, and reduced chemical usage compared to traditional resins.

Effective Removal and Recovery from Battery Metal Wastewater Streams

Lewatit® MonoPlus TP 207 efficiently treats wastewater from battery metal processing plants by selectively removing toxic heavy metals even amidst high hardness concentrations. The selective regeneration of this resin allows further recovery and recycling of valuable heavy metals.

Extensive application experience has continuously validated the clear value and proven reliability of Lewatit® resins:

● Up to twice the cycle time of conventional resins;

● Significant savings in regeneration chemical consumption;

● Exceptional exchange kinetics enabling impurity removal down to trace levels;

● High resilience against osmotic and mechanical stress for longer resin lifetimes.

In-depth exchanges contribute to the sustainable development of the industry

Lewatit® ion exchange resins offer a trusted, integrated solution enabling high-purity metal concentrates, operational efficiency, and reduced environmental impact, strongly supporting sustainability objectives in the battery metal recycling industry.

In addition to exhibiting products and solutions, from 10:35 to 11:00 on August 9, during the presentation titled “Applications of Lewatit® Ion Exchange Resins in Lithium Battery”, Dr. Dirk Steinhilber, Application Technology Manager of the Liquid Purification Technologies (LPT) business unit, will delve into the technical principles and innovative value of LANXESS' ion exchange resins for the recovery and refining of critical battery materials. They will conduct in-depth discussions with on-site professionals on the technological development paths for industry upgrading and explore more possibilities for sustainable development.
